Early 20th Century Moderism
Claude Debussy was the first famous French modernist composer. He is primarily known
for his orchestra and piano works, and one opera, but composed other vocal music and some
chamber music. His works are seen as a reaction against the heavy Late Romantic German like
Richard Wagner. His works are often quiet and gentle, and explore new harmonics that will
become popular among later composers. His new style of piano music is the greatest change
since Chopin's. He and his slighty younger contemporary Maurice Ravel (1875 - 1937) are
the label.
